Young residents in a cul-de-sac start a YouTube Channel to pass time at home during Covid lockdown. Confined to their suburban panopticon, they film family and neighbours doggedly preparing the annual street Christmas lights display amidst the chaos and disruption of the pandemic. These attempts to maintain some-kind-of-normal go sideways, when a new neighbour moves in to the street.
Strange anomalies start appearing in their footage and they become convinced he is involved in something sinister. In a quest to unravel the mystery, they unwittingly plunge into a reality stranger than conspiracy. As the line between truth and fiction blurs into oblivion, they realise that to survive, they must change the way they think about everything — the world, each other and themselves.
Up in Lights is a new series by ‘that Osama Jesus artist’ Priscilla Bracks. It dives back into the primordial soup of popular culture, where media, politics and Uncle Ned’s BBQ rants collide. This timeshe explores TheSocial Soap of internet culture, where appearances are everything and the truth is outta there…
Every character in the story is portrayed by Priscilla who uses beauty-app video filters to dramatically alter her appearance, and ask why we bother maintaining the facade of staged authenticity, best-of-reels and pre-packaged urban-tribalism in social media. In a world where online identity management is now more obligation than choice, opting out of this work to establish a personal and professional narrative, may be one of the last forms of protest available. Priscilla hasn’t really opted out though. Instead she morphs into more than 15 different characters to create trying to get a grip on the slippery slope of contemporary truth in a confusing narrative of alternate facts that rival any political apparatchik’s attempt to pollute the Information Biome.
